Diagnosis

Diagnoses_Species: Valves vary in shape from narrow oval to almost oblong and are 28–42 mm long and 18–30 mm wide. The apical area is generally a narrow, slightly curved, v-shaped indentation, 6–7 mm long. There was some variation in the width of the apical region, as some specimens had slightly wider apical regions. There is a prominent flange or spine present on the right side of the apical region. This flange varied in length from 3 to 5 µm, and was about 0.5–0.9 the length of the apical region. The apical area is made up of nine plates. There is a smaller flange, about 3 µm long, to the right of the third plate. There are also two small protrusions originating near the end of the v-shaped indentation. The flagellar pore appears to be present at the base of the apical region. Close to the origin of the flagella is a small round pusule. The right anterior side of the valve, next to the apical region, is flattened rather than rounded. The valve surface is smooth. Two sizes of pores are present, one approximately 0.3 µm, and a second approximately 0.1 µm. The smaller sized pores are present around the periphery of the valve and scattered in the center. The larger pores are scattered over the valve, sometimes in short rows radiating towards the center. The intercalary region can be wide 2–5 µm, and has a clear horizontal banding pattern. The plastid is large, and appears to radiate in strands towards the periphery of the cell filling the cytoplasm. A clear pyrenoid with a ring-shaped starch-sheath is absent. The nucleus is round to kidney shaped, and is present in the posterior of the valve. This species reproduces asexually in a division cyst covered by a transparent layer, attached to the base of the culture vessel or to other surfaces.
