Diagnosis

Cells are boat-shaped, motile, and solitary. Cells are rectangular in girdle view, and widely  lanceolate in valve view. Both valves have a central longitudinal raphe with a nodule (bump) in the middle. Valve surface is covered in transverse striations that are crossed by finer longitudinal striations (Hasle and Syvertsen 1997). Two chloroplasts are present, one on each side of the raphe.
