Gymnodinium linucheae
Diagnosis
Coccoid cells 10-12 micrometers in diameter enclosed in a cellulosic cell wall, with 2 chloroplasts and 2 stalked pyrenoids; pyrenoids without invasive chloroplast thylakoids; chloroplast envelope of 3 membranes; lamellae arranged in groups of 3 closely appressed thylakoids. Nucleus typically dinokaryon, with nucleolus, and double nuclear membrane with pores. Cells divide in coccoid stage only in hospite and in culture. In culture, cells motile in light phase, and coccoid in dark phase. Mastigote stage in culture typically gymnodinioid, with epicone larger than hypocone; cingulum displaced 0"17 times the length of the cell. Microtubular basket present. Neither trichocysts nor 'eyespots' observed.
