Centropyge loricula
Diagnosis
Diagnosis_Genus: Centropyge Kaup. Dorsal rays IIV-IV (rarely XIII), 15-19; anal rays III, 15-19; lateral-line scales 28-49; gill rakers 4-8+11-19; body depth 1.6-2.25 in SL; head 3.0-4.0 in SL; orbit 2.3-3.75 in head; body ovoid; median fins and color as described in the diagnosis for the genus, some species with varying degrees of sexual dichromatism (Pyle, 2003).
Diagnosis_Species: Holacanthus loriculus Günther. D. 14/16 A. 3/17.

Etymology
The etymology of the genus “centropyge” comes from the Greek “kentron” = sting and “pyg” = rearward with reference to the showy spine of the operculum bent towards the tail. The name of the species “loricula” is the diminutive of “lorica” = breastplate, corset, with reference to the drawing with vertical bars recalling the laces of a corset.
Type species
The type species of the genus Centropyge is Holacanthus tibicen (Cuvier 1831).

Life cycle
The life span of Centropyge loricula is 6 to 10 years.
Centropyge loricula are sexually dichromatic. The blue streaks on the males dorsal and anal fins are more pronounced than on the female, and they are also larger (animal-world).
Centropyge engage in a complex, daily crepuscular spawning ritual which last 4 to 7 days. Each female spawns once daily with the harem male. Each female spawns a moderate number of eggs (100 to 1.000) per day (Bauer & Bauer, 1981). Spawning occurs throughout the year, with no observable lunar periodicity (Callan, 2007).
Longevity: more than 3 years
Reproduction_mode: sexual_hermaphrodite_protogynous
Spawning_method: external fertilization in the water column
Fecondity_number_of_eggs_per_adult: 1.000 to 1.500 eggs per female (Callan, 2007)
Fertility_period: annual
