Diagnosis

Unicellular, ovoid, sphercial or polygonal, and 4 to 5 micrometers in diamater. Numerous green chloroplasts that appear as cytoplasmic granules. The chloroplasts contain strach granules that stain intensely with GMS, PAS and Gridley fungal stains. The cell xalls may appear doubly contoured.

Life cycle

Chlorella sp. reproduce asexually by internal septation and cytoplasmic cleavage, producing up to 20 daughter cells within the sporangium. Upon maturation, the outer wall of the sporangium ruptures, releasing the sporangiospores, each of which goes on to produce sporangiospores of its own.
